Data licences

MoverDash’s trip cost calculator runs on open data. Here is every source, its licence, and how we make the files derived from OpenStreetMap.

01

OpenStreetMap data (ODbL)

The trip calculator’s road network, route lines and gas stations come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors. The files below are derived from it and are available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Any rights in individual contents of the database are licensed under the Database Contents License.

  • Road network: graph.bin (also graph.bin.gz): junctions with their coordinates and the road pieces between them (length, speed, road class, toll and ferry flags).
  • Route lines: assets/trip/shapes/{latitude}_{longitude}.json, one file per 1° tile.
  • Gas stations and fast-charging sites: pois.json (charging sites also include the sources listed below).

02

How the files are made

  • Source: the Geofabrik extract of OpenStreetMap for Canada, downloaded October 15, 2026.
  • Roads kept: highway = motorway, trunk, primary, secondary and their links; route = ferry; and the service roads that lead to a ferry berth. Roads tagged access = no or private are left out.
  • Speed: the road’s maxspeed tag, or a default by road class; ferries use their duration tag.
  • Network: a junction is any point shared by two roads or a road end. Points with no choice are merged, and route lines are simplified to about 25 m. Ferry ends and one-way road ends are linked to the nearest road (within 6 km and 400 m).
  • Stations: amenity = fuel, and amenity = charging_station with a fast-charging socket.

We’ll send the scripts that make these files to anyone who asks: support@moverdash.ca.
