How storage with a mover works

Many movers store your things in vaults (also called crates) in a warehouse. A vault is about 7 × 5 × 7 feet — roughly 250 cubic feet, or one room. You pay per vault, per month.

What it costs

A storage vault costs $60–$125 a month; the middle of the market is $90. Bigger units — 16-foot bins and 20-foot containers — run $140–$290 a month.

Mover storage or self-storage?

One vault costs about the same as a 5 × 5 self-storage locker: $81–$107 every 4 weeks in the GTA and Hamilton, from $99 in Vancouver. A 10 × 10 locker runs $199–$335. With a mover, the crew loads the vaults for you; with self-storage you move things in yourself or pay movers to.

Moving in and out

You pay twice for the move: into storage and back out, at the mover’s hourly rate for the time of month and season. Book the move out early — movers schedule these first come, first served.

How you are billed

Movers typically ask you to pay storage to the end of the current month when they pick up, then bill on the first of each month to a card on file. Keep your forwarding address and phone number up to date.

Storage during a long-distance move

If your things are held during a move between cities, storage is often charged by the weight of the shipment instead of per vault, at a rate that depends on the city where it is stored.

What to ask before you store

  • The price per vault per month, and how many vaults your home needs
  • Whether the warehouse is their own, heated and insured
  • What the moves in and out of storage will cost
  • How much notice they need before delivery
  • Whether you can get something out of a vault before the final delivery

Moving & storage questions

How much does storage cost when you move?

One mover’s vault — about a room’s worth — usually costs $80–$125 a month. A 1-bedroom needs 1–2 vaults, a 2-bedroom 2–3 and a 3-bedroom 3–4. Moves into and out of storage are extra, at the hourly rate.

Is mover storage cheaper than self-storage?

About the same per unit: a vault costs roughly what a 5 × 5 self-storage locker does ($81–$107 every 4 weeks in the GTA and Hamilton). The difference is the work — with a mover, the crew packs the vaults and delivers them to your new home.
