Between cities, movers price a move by how much your things weigh (or how much space they take) and how far they go, not by the hour. Here is how it works, with 2026 prices.
| Home | Weight | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 1 bedroom | about 2,500 lb | 300–500 cu ft |
| 2 bedrooms | 4,000–5,000 lb | — |
| 3 bedrooms | about 7,500 lb | 900–1,500 cu ft |
| House, 4+ bedrooms | 8,000–14,000 lb | over 1,500 cu ft |
Rates run about $0.50–$0.85 per pound plus 8–15% for fuel, and up to $0.90–$1.40 per pound on the longest routes. As a check: a real Mississauga-to-Calgary move of 5,400 lb in February 2026 came to $4,597 before tax.
Under about 500 km, some movers quote a flat price and others charge their hourly rate plus travel time. Some Ontario movers switch to long-distance pricing once a move goes past about 100 km. Compare quotes on the same inventory.
With a shared (consolidated) truck you pay for the space you use. On real 2026 jobs this came to about $6–$8.50 per cubic foot — 273 cu ft from Toronto to Vancouver cost $1,668. It usually beats a dedicated truck under about 500 cu ft, but delivery can take 7–14 days.
A moving container usually costs 30–40% less than full service on the same route. On short routes it is not always cheaper: about $1,900–$2,200 for a 1-bedroom from Toronto to Ottawa.
June to August usually costs 20–30% more, and September to November can be 20–30% cheaper. The first and last days of the month cost more. In Quebec, prices around July 1 run 30–50% above the rest of the year.

For a 2-bedroom with a dedicated truck, about $4,200–$7,000 from Toronto to Calgary, $5,500–$9,000 from Toronto to Vancouver and $3,200–$5,800 from Toronto to Halifax, before tax. A shared truck can cost much less for a small load.
Usually not. Between cities, movers price by weight or volume and distance, plus fuel. Under about 500 km, some still charge by the hour plus travel time.
