Moving in or out of a condo

The move itself is priced like any local move. What changes is the building: elevators, loading docks, insurance papers and deposits.

Book the elevator first

In Ottawa, most condo buildings want the elevator reserved 48–72 hours ahead; in Metro Vancouver, a move-in or move-out slot often has to be booked through management one to two weeks ahead.

Certificate of insurance

Buildings often ask the mover for a certificate of insurance before move day. Ask for it when you book and send it to management.

Deposits

Some buildings hold a refundable damage deposit while you move: $200–$500 is common in Ottawa, and Vancouver stratas may ask $500–$1,000.

Time slots

Your move has to fit the slot you booked, and slots can get shortened when the elevator is needed elsewhere. Ask management about the loading dock, truck parking and building access hours as well.

What to ask your building and your mover

  • Building: the elevator booking, time slot and deposit
  • Building: the loading dock, parking and access hours
  • Mover: a certificate of insurance in the building’s name
  • Mover: how they protect the elevator and hallways
  • Mover: what happens if the slot runs over
