How movers price a piano move

Movers in Canada price a piano by two things: how big it is and how many stairs are at each end. Moved on its own across town, it is usually a flat price, not an hourly one. Here are the usual ranges across Canada.

Usual cost of a local piano move in Canada, before tax
PianoLocal moveEach flight of stairs
Upright$250–$500+$50–$100
Baby grand$400–$700+$100–$150
Grand$600–$1,200+$150–$250

Size and type

Uprights are priced by height. Small spinets and consoles cost the least, and full-size uprights up to about 60 inches cost the most. Grands are priced by length. A baby grand, up to about 5½ feet, costs less than a parlour or concert grand. Grands also take longer, because the legs and pedal lyre come off before the move and go back on after it. Some movers also send a bigger crew for a grand: one Montréal mover lists 2 movers for an upright and 3 for a grand.

Stairs

Stairs are the biggest extra. Movers charge per flight, and charge more for heavier pianos. Some include the first few steps or the first flight; others charge from the first step. A second floor can double the price. One Québec mover lists $249–$399 for an upright with up to 3 steps, and $499–$599 to a second floor.

On its own, or with the rest of your home

If the piano moves with the rest of your home, many movers add it to the hourly move as one extra item. For an upright, that is usually about $200, and anywhere from $80 to $300. That is often cheaper than booking a separate piano move.

Distance

These prices are for moves within the same city. Between cities the piano is quoted for the trip, and it costs more: one Québec mover lists $699–$1,249 for a piano from Montréal to Trois-Rivières.

What to tell the mover for an accurate quote

  • The type of piano, and its height (upright) or length (grand)
  • How many steps or flights there are at each home, and whether there is an elevator
  • Any tight turns, narrow doors or a spiral staircase
  • Whether it moves on its own or with the rest of your home
  • Ask for one written, flat price that includes the stairs at both ends
