How packing is priced

Packing is billed by the hour, per packer, like the move itself. Here is what it costs and how long it takes.

The hourly rate

Two packers cost about $120 an hour in the middle of the market, and most charge $110–$140. A third packer adds about $40–$45 an hour. Some movers have a 2-hour minimum.

How long it takes

Two packers need about 2–3 hours for a studio and 3–5 for a 1-bedroom. A 2-bedroom takes 5–7 hours, and for 3 bedrooms several movers send three packers for most of a day.

Boxes and materials

Most packing rates do not include boxes, tape and paper — they are billed on top. A few movers include them in the hourly rate, so compare like with like. A 1-bedroom usually fills 25–40 boxes; a 2-bedroom, 40–60.

Full or partial packing

You don’t have to hand over the whole home. Many movers pack only the kitchen, the fragile things or the artwork and leave the rest to you; some also unpack at the new home.
