How the index is made
- Source The standard hourly rates moving companies publish on their own websites, for 2, 3 and 4 movers with a truck. Each rate was read and checked by hand; the page and the date are recorded for every figure.
- Usual rate and range The usual rate is the median of the standard rates a market’s movers publish, after removing peak-date and special-offer rates and fixing obvious errors; “most charge” is the range most of them fall in. Rounded to $5.
- Move totals The usual rate × typical labour hours (studio 2–3 h, 2 bedrooms 4–6 h, a 4-bedroom house 8–10 h) plus about 1 hour of travel. A 2-bedroom uses 3 movers.
- Not included Sales tax, packing materials, stairs or long carries, storage, and peak-date surcharges (month-end, summer, weekends, and July 1 in Québec).
- Not quotes These are advertised rates, not final prices. A written quote for your own move is the only price that counts.
