Do Canadian movers publish their prices? A MoverDash study
About 4 in 10 Canadian moving companies promise “no hidden fees” on their websites. About 1 in 9 publish a price. What that means when you compare movers.

Key points
- About 1 in 9 Canadian moving companies publish a price on their website: an hourly rate or a fixed package.
- About 4 in 10 promise “no hidden fees” or use similar wording.
- So the promise is more than three times as common as a price you can check before you call.
- Without a published price, compare written quotes line by line: crew size, hourly rate, minimum hours, travel time and every fee.
When you look for a mover, you usually can’t see a price until you call or fill in a form. We wanted to know how common that is, so MoverDash studied the websites of 1,116 Canadian moving companies in October 2026.
What we found
| Measure | Share |
|---|---|
| Publish a price (hourly rate or fixed package) | 11% (about 1 in 9) |
| Promise “no hidden fees” or similar | 38% (about 4 in 10) |

About 1 in 9 companies (11%) publish a price on their website: an hourly rate for a crew, a rate per mover, a rate for a truck and driver, or a fixed package. About 4 in 10 (38%) promise “no hidden fees” or use similar wording.
So a promise about fees is more than three times as common as a price you can check. That doesn’t mean companies making the promise have hidden fees. It means that on most websites, you can’t verify the promise until you get a quote.
Why the price is hard to see
Most local moves are billed by the hour. The total depends on the crew’s rate, the hours it works, travel time and any extra fees, so two quotes with the same rate can differ by hundreds of dollars. Our guide shows how: is my moving quote fair?
To know the usual rate before you call, use published rates. The Canada Moving Cost Index lists what movers publish in 15 markets.
What to ask a mover that doesn’t publish a price
Ask for a written quote that lists:
- crew size and truck size
- the hourly rate for the whole crew, not per mover. Québec’s consumer office warns about ads that show a per-mover rate as if it were the crew rate (OPC).
- minimum hours, and whether travel counts toward them
- travel time or a truck fee
- every extra charge: stairs, long walks to the truck, heavy items, packing materials, fuel
- tax, the total, and the payment terms
In Ontario, a moving contract over $50 must be in writing, with itemized prices, the total, the dates and the payment terms (Ontario.ca).
How we did the study
- Websites: 1,116 Canadian moving companies listed on MoverDash. We left out 6 websites that turned out to be non-Canadian or no longer a moving company.
- Pages: each company’s home page and the service and pricing pages it links to, read from October 8 to 12, 2026.
- What counts as a price: an hourly rate for the company’s own crew, a rate per mover, a truck-and-driver rate, or a fixed package price. General statements about what “movers usually charge” don’t count.
- Checking: every possible price match was checked by hand, plus pages that mention dollars near words like “hour” or “mover”. For “no hidden fees” and similar wording, customer reviews and advice to readers were removed, and a random sample was checked by hand.
- Limits: prices inside PDFs, quote calculators or images aren’t counted, so the share that publishes a price may be a little higher. Websites change; these figures describe October 2026.
Questions people ask
Does “no hidden fees” mean a mover is hiding nothing?
It’s a promise, not a price. A quote that lists every charge in writing is what lets you check it.
Why don’t more movers publish prices?
Our study doesn’t ask movers why. Most local moves are billed by the hour, and the total depends on the hours worked, travel time and any extra fees: how to compare moving quotes.
